About the Documentation Center

The Documentation Center of UEM, under the custody of the Complex of Research Support Centers – COMCAP, located at the State University of Maringá-PR. It was implemented with resources from the 03/2003 FINEP call; through the 01/2007 call, the subproject was based, in its construction, on the list of some equipment from the National Archives. Its purpose is to digitize and preserve historical documents to contribute to the growth of research in various fields of knowledge. It has equipment that reads and scans microfilms, maps, newspapers, and other documents up to size A1. Over the years, the Center has gained notoriety for the unparalleled quality of its work compared to other public and private digitization centers in the state of Paraná (MATSUOKA, 2025).

About the project

In 2009, the CDO digitized, in partnership with the Laboratory of Present Time Studies (LabTempo-UEM), 104 rolls of microfilms of documents about Brazil, produced by U.S. diplomacy between 1945 and 1959. The collection organized by the National Archives and Record Administration (NARA) is composed of the following series: M1492 - Records of the Department of State Relating to Internal Affairs of Brazil, 1945-1949, 48 rolls; M1487, Records of the Department of State Relating to Internal Political and National Defense Affairs of Brazil, 1950-1954, 14 rolls; M1489 - Records of the Department of State Relating to Internal Political and National Defense Affairs of Brazil, 1950-1954, 34 rolls; and M1511, Records of the Department of State Relating to Internal Political and National Defense Affairs of Brazil, 1955-1959, 8 rolls. It is noteworthy that NARA has not yet digitized these documents and that the CDO was the first to make them virtually available. Also in 2009, the almost complete collection of the military studies journal "Em Guarda," published in the 1930s-40s, was digitized. Other collections are in the process of being digitized, including the collection of plans and maps from the former Land and Cartography Institute of the State of Paraná (ITCF), with 700 originals from the 19th and 20th centuries.

In the last two years, since 2018, in partnership with the city hall of Maringá-PR, the newspaper Folha do Norte do Paraná (1962-1979) was digitized. Together with the scholarship holder Vanessa M. Matsuoka and the technician Edson M. da Silva from UEM, as well as the technical agent Hagá Galvão and the historian Elias Theodoro Mateus from the heritage sector of the city hall of Maringá, the work was carried out with due care and respect for the archive. This material is currently being processed for later publication on the CDO website.
